What is Hobby?
Hobby is a JAVA Twitch chat bot that I originally created for my personal use (as a... hobby, You guessed it.) and decided to let others use it if they wanted.
- Why create it in JAVA?
- Java was chosen for its cross-platform support, ensuring the bot runs seamlessly on any operating system.
- Why create it at all when there are so many good alternatives?
- I wanted a bot tailored to my own needs, independent of third-party dependencies or external systems.
- Beginning with version 2, Hobby has transitioned to a modular, plugin-based design. To get started, download Hobby2, which serves as the plugin manager. Upon first launch, you will be prompted to select the plugins you wish to enable, including options such as Twitch, Chat, RCON, and Static Commands.
You retain full control over plugin maintenance: updates for both the plugin manager (Hobby2) and any installed plugins can be checked at any time directly through the GUI. Alternatively, you may configure Hobby2 to automatically check for updates on every launch. - Hobby runs entirely on your local machine and never communicates with any server other than Twitch, with the sole exception of RCON commands sent to a game server when you explicitly configure them. If you enable Text-to-Speech within the Chat plugin, all incoming messages are forwarded to ZeroValueEntertainment.com for processing. Please note that no data is ever logged or retained.
Hobby is a powerful tool that enables your chat to send RCON commands (when your game or server supports RCON), mouse clicks, key presses, and custom commands executed on your computer.
It also supports the common use cases for chat bots, including static commands, counters, timed commands, and sound playback.
Sending commands to a VR headset is not currently supported. I do not own one, so I have been unable to develop, test, or debug that functionality. It has been requested in the past, and if I acquire a VR headset in the future, I may add support for it. At this time, it is not part of the roadmap
Hobby also allows you to trigger specific actions based on bits and channel point redemptions.
Windows Defender may flag the bot. This is because it is developed as a personal project rather than through a commercial certificate authority, which I understand to cost between $100 and $500 USD.
I self-sign the release with GPG so that you can verify the files originate from me and have not been altered. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether you trust my signing.
